The Many Specialties of Agrimony
I love having the chance to work with uncommon herbs and botanicals. Not that they are uncommon to herbalists, but many may be unfamiliar.
One of those I'm working with this week is Agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria). Agrimony is used in the treatment of airway and urinary system diseases, digestive tract diseases, and chronic wounds. Historical accounts of the beneficial effects of agrimony date back as far as the 4th to 5th centuries; the herb was also mentioned in the Old English Herbarium from the 10th century.
Agrimony has long been used in traditional medicine to treat:
• lung inflammation
• diarrhea
• liver diseases
• cholecystitis, cholestasis
• intestinal or bladder atony
• pyelonephritis
• bleeding disorders
• skin defects
• inflammatory conditions of the oral mucosa.
Infusions and decoctions prove useful, as do Tinctures (alcohol extraction) which prove high efficacy and fast results in administration. Tinctures are mynprefwred methodology of use.
Here are more details regarding the medicinal benefits:
• Digestive Health: Agrimony is used to treat digestive issues such as diarrhea, upset stomach, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Its tannins help to reduce inflammation and absorb substances in the stomach and intestines.
• Antioxidant Properties: Agrimony contains flavonoids and phenolic acids, which act as antioxidants. These compounds help protect the body against oxidative damage and support overall health.
• Skin Conditions: Agrimony can be applied topically to treat mild skin inflammation and redness. It is also used in the treatment of cutaneous porphyria, a condition where porphyrin accumulates in the skin, making it sensitive to sunlight. Best infused with Tallow and Jojoba Oil.
• Antiviral Activity: Research indicates that agrimony has antiviral properties, particularly against viruses like SARS-CoV-2. It may also be beneficial in treating other viral infections, including the drwaded influenza A, B, C and D.
• Liver Health: Agrimony has been shown to improve liver health, particularly in individuals with elevated liver enzymes. It can help regulate liver function and protect against oxidative damage.
• Immune System Support: Agrimony's immunomodulatory effects can help regulate the immune response, reducing levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increasing levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines.
• Antimicrobial Properties: Agrimony has antimicrobial activity, which can help in treating bacterial infections. It is effective against certain pathogens while being safe for beneficial gut bacteria.
• Cancer Prevention: Some studies suggest that agrimony extracts may have a cytostatic effect on tumor cells, potentially inhibiting their growth and proliferation.
• Wound Healing: Agrimony can promote wound healing and is used in the treatment of chronic wounds. Its astringent properties help to tighten and invigorate loose tissue. Like with skincare, infused with Tallow proves beneficial.
• Gallbladder Disorders: Traditionally, agrimony has been used to treat gallbladder disorders, although more research is needed to confirm its efficacy in this area.
• Diabetes Management: Agrimony may help manage diabetes by regulating blood sugar levels.
Mainly my recommendation for this particular herb is in regards to digetive/liver health, but as you see, it has multiple benefits.
